Transforming a Steep Hillside into a Low-Maintenance Front Yard

Not every landscape project starts with a blank slate.

Sometimes the goal isn’t to completely reinvent a property. It’s to solve the everyday frustrations that keep homeowners from enjoying it.

That was exactly the case with this front yard renovation in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The homeowners already loved much of their landscape, but a few steep, difficult-to-mow sections had become more work than they were worth. Our job was to create a landscape that looked natural, required less maintenance, and tied everything together into one cohesive design.

Outcome: A steep, hard-to-mow front yard transformed into a beautiful landscape that’s easier to maintain and looks great year-round.

The Challenge

This wasn’t our first project at this home.

Several years earlier, we built two retaining walls and installed natural stone steps to improve the front yard. The homeowners loved the results, but there were still a few steep hillside sections that had become more frustrating than functional.

Let’s be honest—mowing a steep hillside isn’t anyone’s idea of a relaxing weekend.

These awkward slopes were difficult to maintain, hard to mow, and didn’t contribute much to the overall appearance of the landscape. The homeowners wanted a solution that would reduce maintenance, improve privacy, and make the front yard feel like one complete design instead of several disconnected spaces.

Building With the Landscape

Rather than fighting the hillside, we worked with it.

Our team extended two existing natural boulder retaining walls and built two new ones, creating more than 60 linear feet of retaining walls throughout the front landscape. By terracing the hillside, we transformed steep, difficult-to-maintain slopes into attractive planting beds that are both functional and visually appealing.

Natural stone was chosen because it complements the home’s existing landscape and blends beautifully with the surrounding environment. In total, the project incorporated more than 800 pounds of natural stone, including boulders and wing walls that help connect the different elevations while creating smooth transitions throughout the front yard.

The finished result feels as though it has always been part of the property.

Low-Maintenance Landscape Planting

A beautiful landscape shouldn’t become another weekend chore.

To keep maintenance low while adding year-round beauty, we selected a simple collection of dependable plants that complement the natural stone without overwhelming the space.

Nellie R. Stevens hollies provide evergreen privacy and structure throughout the year. Pugster Blue butterfly bushes bring vibrant summer color while attracting butterflies and other pollinators. Obsession nandinas add texture, seasonal interest, and dependable color with very little maintenance.

Together, these plants soften the natural boulders, frame the home, and create a landscape that looks full and inviting throughout every season without demanding constant pruning or upkeep.

The Finished Result

Today, the front yard feels completely different.

Instead of several disconnected hillsides that were difficult to mow, the landscape now flows naturally from one terrace to the next. The layered boulder retaining walls create structure, while the carefully selected plantings soften the stone and add year-round color and texture.

Most importantly, the homeowners traded hours behind a lawn mower for a landscape that’s easier to maintain and far more enjoyable to come home to.

We’d call that a pretty good trade.

Designed to Last

Designed by Allison and built by Zeb and Dave, this three-day project is another example of how thoughtful landscape design can solve everyday challenges without sacrificing beauty.

By building on improvements we completed several years earlier, we created a front yard that feels cohesive, functions better, and looks like it has always belonged there.

If you have a steep hillside that’s difficult to maintain, natural boulder retaining walls and thoughtfully selected plantings can completely transform the way your landscape looks and functions. Whether you’re looking to reduce maintenance, improve curb appeal, or make better use of your property, we’d love to help bring your vision to life.
