Water begins its journey at a dramatic two-tier sheet waterfall before spilling into a hidden wetland filter and cascading into a 32′ x 32′ ecosystem pond. Across the landscape, an existing pondless waterfall has been transformed into a gently winding lazy river stream, while a hidden “Sneaky Falls” quietly keeps the entire pond healthy by improving circulation. Every feature serves a purpose, yet together they look as though nature created them over time.
That was the vision for this custom ecosystem pond in Andersonville, Tennessee.
The Vision
When homeowners imagine a backyard pond, they usually picture the water.
We think about what they’ll experience.
Where they’ll drink their morning coffee.
What they’ll see while washing dishes.
Where the grandchildren will stop to feed the fish.
How the waterfalls will sound with the windows open on a cool spring evening.
From the very beginning, every design decision centered around one goal:
Make the pond part of everyday life.
Rather than placing the pond in a corner of the yard, we carefully positioned every waterfall, stream, and focal point so the water could be seen from nearly every major room inside the home. Whether standing in the kitchen, relaxing in the living room, or looking out from another part of the house, the pond naturally becomes part of the view.
The result is a backyard that’s just as enjoyable from indoors as it is outside.
Three Waterfalls. Three Different Experiences.
One of the things that makes this project unique is that every waterfall was designed with its own purpose and personality.
The journey begins with a dramatic two-tier sheet waterfall that serves as the primary focal point of the landscape. Water cascades over natural stone before flowing through the Aquascape Wetland Filter, where it begins the natural biological filtration process. From there, the filtered water gently spills into the pond, creating a beautiful entrance while supporting the health of the entire ecosystem.
Next to it, an existing pondless waterfall found new life.
Rather than removing it, we incorporated it into the new design, transforming it into a gently winding lazy river stream. The stream now meanders through the landscape before joining the pond, adding another layer of movement, sound, and visual interest while preserving a feature the homeowners already loved.
The third waterfall is one visitors often don’t notice right away.
We call it the Sneaky Falls.
Hidden naturally among the boulders, this waterfall quietly improves circulation throughout the pond. Because of the pond’s large 32′ x 32′ footprint, additional water movement was needed to efficiently guide water toward the Aquascape Intake Bay. Instead of relying on visible equipment or artificial-looking returns, we designed another natural waterfall that blends seamlessly into the landscape while helping the entire ecosystem function more efficiently.
Sometimes the most important features are the ones you hardly notice.
Together, these three waterfalls each create a different sound, a different view, and a different experience, making the pond feel as though nature designed it that way.
The Secret to Healthy, Balanced Water
One of the biggest misconceptions about ponds is that they’re difficult to maintain.
Modern ecosystem ponds are designed very differently.
Instead of relying on harsh chemicals, this pond uses a complete biological filtration system inspired by nature itself.
An Aquascape Intake Bay quietly pulls water through the pond, capturing leaves and larger debris while continuously circulating water throughout the ecosystem. Hidden beneath carefully placed boulders, it keeps the pond clean without taking away from the natural appearance of the landscape.
At the opposite end of the pond, water flows through a 17-foot Aquascape Wetland Filter built with the Centipede Module system.
Think of the wetland filter as nature’s own water treatment plant.
As water slowly rises through layers of gravel and aquatic plants, beneficial bacteria naturally break down excess nutrients while the surrounding plants absorb impurities. By the time the water returns to the pond, it has been naturally filtered—just as it would in a healthy wetland.
To make routine pond care even easier, we also installed an automatic dosing system that dispenses Aquascape’s natural water treatments on a consistent schedule. Rather than remembering to add treatments manually, the homeowners can enjoy the pond knowing the system is quietly supporting beneficial bacteria, maintaining healthy water conditions, and reducing routine maintenance.
Together, the intake bay, wetland filter, waterfalls, biological filtration, and automatic dosing system work as one balanced ecosystem.
The result is healthy water, thriving fish, and a pond that’s designed to be enjoyed for years to come.
Built for Fish, Designed for People
A successful ecosystem pond isn’t just designed for homeowners—it’s designed for the fish that call it home.
Throughout the pond, we incorporated multiple fish caves built directly into the natural boulder work. These protected spaces provide shelter from predators, places to rest, and cooler areas during East Tennessee’s hot summers.
Large interaction boulders were carefully placed along the pond’s edge, creating comfortable places to sit close to the water, feed the fish, or simply enjoy the sights and sounds of the waterfalls.
A natural stone bridge crosses the stream, creating another destination within the landscape and offering a unique perspective of the pond below.
Every element was intentionally designed to encourage people to slow down, explore, and enjoy the space.
Twenty Days of Craftsmanship
Projects like this don’t happen overnight.
Over the course of twenty days, our team carefully excavated the pond, installed the plumbing and biological filtration systems, positioned every boulder by hand, constructed each waterfall, built the natural stone bridge, and finished the surrounding landscape so every element blended seamlessly together.
Nothing about this project was random.
Every rock was selected with intention.
Every waterfall serves a purpose.
Every view from inside the home was carefully considered.
Our goal wasn’t simply to build a pond.
It was to create a landscape that looks as though it has always belonged there.
The Finished Result
Today, the homeowners don’t just have a pond.
They have a destination.
The waterfalls provide a relaxing soundtrack for everyday life. The winding stream invites visitors to explore. The bridge encourages you to stop and take in the view. Healthy koi glide beneath natural boulders while every window inside the home frames a different perspective of moving water.
It’s the kind of backyard that changes how you experience your home.
And that’s exactly what thoughtful landscape design should do.
Built with Intention
Designed by Allison and built by Zeb and Dave, this Andersonville ecosystem pond showcases what’s possible when thoughtful design meets proven Aquascape technology.
From repurposing an existing pondless waterfall into a natural lazy river stream to incorporating a hidden wetland filter, intake bay, automatic dosing system, and three uniquely designed waterfalls, every detail was planned with one goal in mind: creating a pond that looks natural, functions beautifully, and can be enjoyed for years to come.
If you’ve been dreaming about adding a custom ecosystem pond to your property, we’d love to help you create a backyard retreat that’s every bit as beautiful as it is functional.
