Happy Fall Spring Starts Now!
It’s the first week of fall and we say Happy Fall Spring Starts Now! What does that mean? It means if you want your outdoor living space to really come alive next Spring, you need to plant this Fall.
Trees & Shrubs
Plant Spring flowering trees such as Dogwoods, Redbuds, and Ornamental Cherries in the Fall. First of all this allows them start getting their roots established over the Fall and Winter months. As a result, in the Spring they can spend all their energy providing you with glorious blooms. The same concept applies to Spring flowering shrubs such as Azaleas, Rhododendrons, and Forsythia. These plants have set their buds for next Spring and are ready to be planted this Fall. There are some reblooming Azaleas that will give you color in the Fall as well as blooms in the Spring! You can’t beat that!
Bulbs
If you’re like me and love to see those early spring flowers like Tulips, Daffodils, and Crocus, you need to plant them this Fall. Many times I have customers come to me in the Spring wanting to buy Tulips and Daffodils, etc. and I explain to them that these are bulbs that must be planted in Fall for next Spring blooms.
Perennials
Fall plantings are not limited to Spring blooming trees, shrubs, and flower bulbs. Planting perennials in the Fall gives them a head start on root development. Some perennials are actually evergreen, keeping their foliage in the winter. These include certain varieties of fern such as Autumn, Tassel, Holly, and Christmas. Lenten Rose is another evergreen perennial. There are many varieties of Lenten Rose that bloom at different times during the Winter and Spring months.
