Support Clean Water
Who doesn’t love the sight and smell of freshly mown green grass? We Americans love our lawns. A sign of status of sorts, it fills our need for orderliness and gives us a place to play. This love affair with grass in the U.S. covers 40 million acres, making it the largest single crop grown. (3 times more than irrigated corn!) Of the estimated 29 Billion gallons of water used daily by households, 30% is devoted to watering our lawns & gardens. We also apply 2.4 billion pounds of nitrogen a year and 50% of it can leach into our surface and ground water. Also applied to lawns yearly are 67 million pounds of pesticides.
